This painting is a playful nod to the still life tradition. Depicting flowers bought from the supermarket, it inverts classical associations to wealth. Where flowers and decorative objects (including textiles) once signified refinement, affluence, and exotic rarity, they are now ubiquitous. The featured chrysanthemum, St John’s wort berries and mason jar, whilst rich in symbolism, are all commonplace.
Leopard print, although subtle in this painting’s background, straddles the line between luxury and kitsch. Intensified in colour and texture, this painting furthers an interest in the tension between authenticity and artifice, especially with how we curate our homes, our clothing, and the surfaces that surround us.
*Unused, cut from a roll and stretched over a canvas frame.
This work was a finalist in the Moreton Bay Art Prize, 2025.
